SUMMARY: The SLP Instructor supervises adults who reside in Waiver supported living situations by providing them support, assistance and training as needed in daily living and community access skills.

Employment Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
Experience:
- Employment experience with persons having developmental or other disabilities is preferred.
- Experience running a household would be helpful.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements:
- Good skills in communication, planning, and writing, including grammar and punctuation.
- Good skills in mathematics, budgeting and household financial record-keeping.
- Must be able to work effectively as a member of an Interdisciplinary Team regarding individual program planning.
- Good organizational skills in order to complete all assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to complete required forms and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to lift and assist people to standing, as needed.
- Have the physical ability to respond quickly to the needs of persons served during crises.
- Ability to communicate accurately and effectively with persons served and with other staff.
- Ability to read and prepare food from a recipe and to cook basic foods without a recipe.
- Ability to perform basic household tasks.
Legal/Certification Requirements:
- Operator License, plus Endorsement - For- Hire.
- Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Automated External Defibrillation and Standard First Aid.
- Medication Administration Training.
Other:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the safety or health of himself/herself or of others.
- Must demonstrate an interest in and empathy for individuals with disabilities.
- Must demonstrate a willingness to accept supervision.
- Must not be listed with a finding on the list of Indiana Registered Nurse Aides.
- Must not be listed on the registry of the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General,
- Fraud Prevention and Detection Exclusion Program.
- Must not have conviction of any crimes listed in Title 460 IAC 6-10-5 on Limited Criminal History Check.
WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
The SLP Instructor:
- works under the direct supervision of the SLP Supervisor;
- works cooperatively with residents, all other Arc staff, residents' families and others in the
- community, to provide strong and consistent programs for each individual.
- communicates successfully with and relates to persons served in a respectful, adult manner;
- maintains professional relationship with persons served, families, community members, and other Arc staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Conduct individualized training according to the goals and methodology included in each person’s Individualized Support Plan (ISP)
- Provide training and other experiences to residents in their community according to the schedule assigned
- Provide training and other experiences to residents in their home according to the schedule assigned.
- Continually analyze individuals' skills to assess training needs; report training needs to Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP).
- Provide transportation, supervision and/or assistance, as needed and requested, to residents’ appointments and social activities.
- Accurately record services/goal training provided as required for billing purposes and/or by State regulations, according to Arc procedures.
- In preparation for development of the ISP, make suggestions for training goals to the QMRP.
- Prepare meals according to the posted menu.
- Follow residents’ dietary restrictions.
- Encourage residents to assist with food preparation, table preparation and clean up.
- Discuss nutrition and diets during preparation.
- Discuss proper table manners and etiquette during meals.
- Keep residence clean; encourage residents to assist with daily cleaning tasks.
- Continually monitor the safety of the home and immediately report concerns to supervisor; instruct persons served in appropriate safety habits.
- Participate in and assist persons served during emergency drills and medical situations.
- Provide CPR/AED/First Aid as needed.
- Be familiar and comply with medical information/restrictions of persons served.
- Provide safe and appropriate administration of medications.
- Monitor side effects of medications and recognize and prevent dangerous medication interactions.
- Administer individual-specific treatments and interventions to manage seizures, behavior, diet and nutrition, medication side effects, swallowing difficulties, emotional and physical crises and significant health concerns.
- Assist with personal hygiene needs as necessary.
- Practice Universal Precautions and Infection Control at all times.
- Protect the rights of persons served according to agency and State regulations and ensure that individuals
- have the ability to exercise those rights.
- Regularly provide residents with opportunities for personal choice.
- Protect persons served from any act of abuse, neglect, exploitation, fraud or mistreatment.
- Follow agency and State guidelines for reporting accidents/incidents.
- Act as an advocate on behalf of persons served.
- Maintain confidentiality of persons served at all times; follow agency and HIPAA requirements.
- Use funds of persons served according to their ISP and agency policy.
- Complete required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Maintain up to date working files, progress and goal charts.
- Maintain up to date and accurate medication administration charts.
- Submit requests to supervisor for needed items and equipment.
- Provide guidance and/or assistance to individuals who may be having difficulties.
- Notify SLP Supervisor, or after office hours on-call staff, if/when an emergency issue arises regarding
- illness, injury, behavior or other personal concern. Do not hesitate to call 911 first.
Know and follow all State, Medicaid and agency policies and procedures. Call a case conference when issues arise regarding residents which require Interdisciplinary Team intervention. Provide positive reinforcement and act as a role model to residents to encourage independence. Maintain appropriate public relations and positively represent Arc in the community.
ESSENTIAL GENERAL DUTIES:
- Make recommendations to the SLP Supervisor regarding other services that a person served might request and/or need.
- Meet or exceed the minimum standard criteria in all categories of the Job Performance Evaluation.
- Adhere to assigned work schedule.
- Perform appropriately and effectively in crises and/or when under pressure.
- Attend staff training sessions and continue to upgrade skills by personal study of developments in the field.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL DEMANDS:
- Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
