Job Description
POSITION: Circulation Assistant
REPORTS TO: Adult Services Manager/Librarian
NATURE OF WORK: This is front-line public service and clerical work involving regular and recurring tasks and the application of prescribed procedures. The Circulation Assistant works primarily in the evenings and on Saturdays, as scheduled. Reports to the Adult Services Manager/Librarian. It is a part-time hourly position.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct service to the public at the circulation desk, including charging and discharging library materials, taking reserve and patron requests, registering patrons for library cards, answering the telephone, servicing reserve and ILL pickups, and assisting patrons with photocopies, computers, and faxes. Provides clerical support by maintaining borrower registration files, preparing registration packets, updating reserve files, and monitoring the cash drawer. Shelving organization and inventory duties. Performs any other responsibilities assigned by the Circulation and System Manager. Will handle money in transactional functions with customer related to copies, fines, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of standard library procedures and the Dewey Decimal System. Proficiency in spelling, punctuation and grammar; ability to write legibly; work accurately with detail; perform basic computer functions in a windows environment. Excellent oral and communication skills. Ability to establish effective working relationships with the staff and public. Neat appearance and social maturity. Work under pressure in a public area. Available to work evenings and some Saturdays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reach 80” high; stoop 12” from floor level; push a book cart, 4 shelves, containing approximately 68 books, weighing approximately 80 pounds; visually identify information on a printed page and on a computer screen; audibly comprehend of the meaning of spoken words.
EDUCATION: High school graduate, some college preferred.
COMPENSATION: This is a part-time hourly position. Compensation is set annually by the Board of Trustees.
