Job Description
POSITION: Library Assistant (Youth Services Department)
REPORTS TO: Youth Services Manager/Librarian
NATURE OF WORK: This is front-line public service and clerical work involving regular and recurring tasks and the application of prescribed procedures. Reports to the Youth Services Manager/Librarian.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct service to the public at the Youth Services front desk, including charging and discharging library materials, taking reserve and patron requests, answering the telephone, and assisting patrons with photocopies, computers, and faxes. Assisted customers at Youth Services using print resources and electronic resources. Shelve materials as needed. Hours cannot go beyond 29 hours per week. Performs any other responsibilities assigned by supervisor. Will handle money in transactional functions with customer related to copies, fines, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Early childhood education experience preferred. A basic understanding of computers and the use of electronic information. Proficiency in spelling; punctuation and grammar; ability to write legibly; work accurately with detail; perform basic computer functions in Microsoft Windows. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish effective working relationships with the staff and public. Neat appearance and social maturity. Work under pressure in a public area.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reach 80” high; stoop 12” from floor level; visually identify information on a printed page and on a computer screen; audibly comprehend of the meaning of spoken words.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Candidate must have graduated from high school (or GED). A post-secondary degree and customer service experience is preferred.
COMPENSATION: This is a part-time hourly position. Compensation is set annually by the Board of Trustees
