Job Title: Intern Mentor

Department: Growing Teens for Life (GTFL)

Employment Status: Part-time/Regular/Non-Exempt

Qualifications: Must be a Christian with strong convictions who is also in agreement with Josiah White’s mission statement, Statement of Faith, and Code of Conduct. This person must be 21 years of age and prior experience working in a related field is required. Previous experience in designated areas is preferred. The Intern Mentor must function as a positive role model for teenage interns while they are working and learning in the Growing Teens for Life Program. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Reports to: Senior Manager of 50 East Greenhouse and Garden Center or Café Manager

Job Summary: The Intern Mentor for Growing Teens for Life must be a Christian and is responsible for collaborating with the Director of Experiential Learning, Café Manager, Senior Manager, and residential treatment teams to ensure Interns are learning work skills to prepare for employment following residential placement. This person will work closely with other café, storefront, and greenhouse operations staff to ensure work assignments are meaningful to the business while helping interns prepare for the certification in the mentor’s area of oversight. Must demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and needs of the service population within Josiah White’s.

Basic Responsibilities

Experiential Learning Activities in the Café, Greenhouse, and Storefront

● Employability Soft Skills as agreed upon with the Director of Experiential Learning.

Collaboration with the Greenhouse Operations Manager or Café Manager

● Ensure all visitors and customers of 50 East have a pleasant and positive experience.

● Providing excellent customer service is a priority.

● Must be willing and able to intervene with difficult customers in an appropriate and positive manner.

● Oversee the safe and secure handling of money, inventory, and retail items within the 50 East.

● Maintaining café/store interior, keeping it clean and organized.

● Preparing daily reports of sales and charges.

● Inventory refill, money collection, and trouble-shoot when problems arise.

● Checking equipment on a regular basis for any defects.

● Assist Business Manager and Facilities Supervisor with other activities which may or may not be connected to the storefront.

● Perform day-to-day 50 East operations duties including routine cleaning and maintenance as assigned by the supervisor.

● Perform administrative functions in support of other Intern Mentors and other Greenhouse management staff.

Working with Interns

● Promote a Christ-Centered environment within the cottage and campus setting facilitating and/or supporting Family Teacher facilitation of devotions in the cottage setting; support Josiah White’s Chaplain and/or Spiritual Life Director in campus Spiritual Life programming.

● Serve as a mentor or facilitate a mentoring relationship with an appropriate individual as approved and agreed upon by the Intern’s Treatment Team.

Agency Support and Enhancement

● Be a positive liaison between Josiah White’s and the Wabash community.

Supervision of Interns

● Supervise Interns daily work-related tasks, activities, and chores.

● Provide teaching and coaching to Interns in areas such as: social skills, interpersonal relationships, personal hygiene, domestic skills, work habits, etc.

● Provide basic first aid for Interns and apply universal precautions procedures when exposed to bodily fluids.

● Engage in conflict resolution, intervene in crisis situations, and physically restrain Interns using MindSet training to prevent risk of physical harm to the Intern or another person.

● Complete other duties as requested by the Director of Experiential Learning, Greenhouse Operations Manager, or Café Manager.

Skills, Supervision, Knowledge, and Ability

● The Intern Mentor must be a Christian who demonstrates a professional commitment to work with children and youth of all ages, their families, the referring agency, community professionals, and the Josiah White’s Services treatment team

● Must be dependable, well organized, and an effective time manager

● Must have the ability to clearly, concisely, and professionally communicate ideas through good verbal and written skills

● Must have an understanding of basic counseling/helping skills

● Must be able to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality

● Must be personable, genuine, empathetic, and able to connect emotionally in their work with youth, treatment team, and other professionals.

● Must be a team player. This person needs to enjoy working closely with other staff members and have the ability to be flexible, adaptive, and positive in his/her actions

● The ability to demonstrate a positive role model for staff and the youth assigned

● Must have an understanding and demonstration of basic supervision and leadership skills

● Will be expected to maintain appropriate hygiene and attire per dress code

● Must develop a sense of responsibility and ownership of business area and communities as

● assigned

Physical Demands of Position

● Must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time, do significant walking, and actively supervise student activity.

● Must be able to work in a variety of climatic conditions (hot, cold, humid, etc.)

● Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.

● Able to perform routine storefront and greenhouse maintenance and cleaning, planting flowers, painting, scrubbing floors, etc.

● Must be able to complete the MindSet physical restraint techniques for residents who are in crisis (expected to meet the requirements of MindSet physical restraints) in order to become certified. This may include the following:

● Vertical Containment-Approach from behind the aggressor with arms raised. Initiate contact with your forearms to the aggressor’s triceps and push the arms forward. Lead with the foot and place the side of your head directly below the aggressor’s shoulder while making chest to back contact. Your shoulders should be at a 45 degree angle. Find your hands and grasp your wrist while pointing your elbows to the ground. Maintain chest to back contact while alternating and widening your stance.

● Object Containment and Release- Assist a partner who has applied the embrace on an individual using an object aggressively. Establish a position on the side of the aggressor closest to the object. Secure the wrist. Using both hands, slide the thumb to a parallel position with the fingers. Release the object by pulling up or pushing down. Throw the object a safe distance away. Communicate with your partner and the aggressor to determine direction.

● Leveraged Embrace- Approach from behind the aggressor with arms raised. Initiate contact with your forearms to the aggressor’s triceps and push the arms forward. Step in and place the side of your head directly below the aggressor’s shoulder while making chest to back contact. Your shoulders should be at a 45 degree angle. Find your hands first then slide to the aggressor’s wrist. Grasp each of the aggressor’s wrists and slide your elbow to the crest of the hip. (Same side of the aggressor's body as your head). Leverage the hip forward with your elbow while alternating and widening your stance.

● Assisted Relocation- From the leveraged embrace, go to the side opposite your partner’s head. Take the grasp of the wrist opposite from you. Place your free hand on the shoulder nearest to you. Stay close and communicate.

● Single Staff Follow Down- From the leveraged embrace, follow the downward movement by going to the knee opposite your head while leaning into the aggressor. Use the momentum to rotate the aggressor to his/her side while positioning your body perpendicular from the chest-to-back contact. Spread your legs for stability. The individual’s shoulders should be perpendicular to the floor. Maintain chest-to-back contact and elbow leverage.

● Duel Staff Bring Down- From the leveraged embrace, ask for assistance to take the aggressor to the floor. Approach on the head side of your partner and secure the legs by dropping to a knee and grasping the ankles in front. (Left to left, right to right).Plant the feet to the floor and communicate with your partner. Go down on the knee opposite your head and use the momentum to rotate the aggressor to his/her side. The shoulders should be perpendicular to the floor. Stack the legs, make chest contact with the back of the knees, and forearm contact with the thighs and shins. Lay flat with your legs spread for stability.

● Must have energy and stamina to work from 8AM-6PM. on a regular basis.

Working Conditions

● 50 East hours are Monday-Friday 6:30AM-5PM, Saturday 8aM-4PM. Hours of work would fall within this timeframe.

● May be required to work a rotating schedule on Saturday depending on staffing and time of year, as well as special weekend events such as the Herb Fest, Founders Day Parade, etc.

● Attend work regularly and be on time.

● Flexibility in taking days off to accommodate for longer or additional work days may be necessary.
