Position Overview:

 

Reporting to the Director of University Safety, this official of the University serves as an integral member of the Student Life team, and is responsible for helping maintain a safe and secure learning environment for the campus community. The University Safety Officer is also responsible for the enforcement of University policies, and regulations.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

Patrol the campus and respond with appropriate action in the event of fire, emergency weather conditions, or crimes against persons or property.

 

Assist the director in maintaining liaison between emergency-service providers (police, fire, ambulance services, etc.) and the University.

 

Report violations of laws, University policies, and safety and security hazards to the director.

 

Conduct investigations of crimes and incidents, and complete the required reports.

 

Assist crime victims through the reporting process, and in connecting with the appropriate resources.

 

Maintain security of all University buildings by checking, securing, opening, and closing buildings according to a schedule provided by the director and other University officials.

 

Provide information to campus visitors upon request.

 

Monitor campus parking areas and roadways, and enforce traffic/parking regulations by issuing tickets, and/or booting/towing vehicles.

 

Provide traffic direction during University events and programs.

 

Provide escort services when requested.

 

Provide unlock services for classrooms, offices and apartments, upon request.

 

Assist motorists with jump starts, unlocks, and/or referrals to locksmiths or tow services when requested.

 

Maintain and update crime and fire logs, and produce a patrol report for each shift.

 

Secondary Job Functions

 

Assist in training new safety staff, under the supervision of the director.

 

Assist with the supervision and scheduling of student staff.

 

Assist with programming and training needs for resident and commuter students, and for University employees.

 

Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of University Safety.

 

Qualifications:

 

A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff

 

High school diploma or equivalent required, some college education preferred.

 

Must be at least 21 years of age.

 

Experience in law enforcement or safety and security preferred.

 

Must possess a current driver's license, with a good driver's record.

 

Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

 

Must pass a thorough background investigation.

 

Must pass pre-employment testing and evaluations.

 

Must be knowledgeable in the use of a police radio.

 

Must be able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously, with a focus on accuracy and timeliness.

 

Must possess word processing skills and a level of proficiency in the use of computers. Microsoft Office experience and understanding required.

 

Must be highly proficient in verbal and written communications, and possess public speaking abilities to assist with programs.

 

Professional appearance and the ability to interact effectively with persons at all organizational levels are essential. Must represent Manchester University with the highest degree of professionalism.

 

Must be highly self-directed, well organized, detail oriented, and able to complete tasks with a minimum degree of supervision.

 

Must possess strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact and work with students, parents, employees, and visitors.

 

Must possess good judgment in decision making, and a general understanding of how to respond to a variety of difficult situations.

 

Must be able to respect confidential information, and not to share it inappropriately.

 

Must be able to consistently present a positive attitude and contribute to a harmonious team environment.

 

Must be able to flex work schedule to meet occasional demands of the University.

 

Other Qualifications (Must be completed within one (1) year of appointment)

 

Certified in standard 1st aid, CPR, and AED.

 

Work Schedule: This is a full time, non-exempt position, forty (40) hours per week, with shift and work day rotation required. Additional hours or schedule changes may be required occasionally, depending on the needs of the University.
